Amman, Sept. 8 (Petra) -- The Consumer Protection Directorate at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply resolved 1,513 of the 1,892 complaints it received from the beginning of the year through the end of August, recording an 80 percent completion rate.
The directorate said the figures reflect its follow-up of consumer complaints and efforts to address them in accordance with applicable legislation.
The number of complaints received during the same period increased from 788 through the end of August last year to 1,892 this year, according to the directorate’s statistics. The increase indicates greater use of the relevant authorities by consumers to seek their rights and highlights the role of market monitoring.
As part of its follow-up of complaints and legal action against violating entities, the directorate issued 52 notices and recorded 48 violations against non-compliant entities, as part of efforts to protect consumers and ensure compliance by commercial and service establishments with applicable legislation.
The complaints covered several sectors. E-commerce accounted for the largest share, with 423 complaints, or 22 percent of the total, followed by electrical appliances with 387 complaints, or 20 percent, and automobiles with 340 complaints, or 18 percent. Furniture accounted for 201 complaints, or 11 percent, while services recorded 199 complaints, also representing 11 percent.
By subject, complaints related to warranties and contracts ranked first, with 902 complaints, or 48 percent of the total. Complaints concerning defective goods or services followed with 756 complaints, or 40 percent, while misleading advertising complaints totaled 165, representing 9 percent.
The directorate said the rate of complaints resolved and addressed is part of its efforts to respond to citizens’ complaints, follow them up through field and legal procedures, and intensify market inspections, contributing to the protection of consumer rights and ensuring the quality of goods and services provided to them.
